If you ever stumbled across the http://src.infinitewave.ca/ site that
is often linked you´ll see that phase-errors are a non-issue. Or do you
mean something different?
With todays linear phase filters you only have to decide how much it
"rings" while that ringing is happening above 20kHz only or how much it
allows aliasing back in the audioband. At best aliasing is only
happening above 21Khz and therefore allows a slower filter that has
less ringing.
Ringing is the pre-echo that happens above the lowpass freequency but
is a beloved term or showing a pic to show the evils of resampling.
Here the suggestions what sounds best are very misleading. One brand
suggest that one, the other one that has a patent for some kind of
filter of cause suggests its one. Every self-proclaimed audiophile
hears some strange non-linear filter best and so on...
I think with 44.1kHz it is best to give up everything above 20kHz and
use a linear filter starting at 20kHz and allowing aliang above 20kHz.
No one will hear if that noise above 20kHz is alias or music :)

One nice experiment is to take the Hires recording of your choice and
apply such a lowpass to it without changing any sampling- or bitrate.
Save that and compare.
