^ This supply has been reported as quite nice with the Touch by quite a few users in the U.S.: http://ciaudio.com/products/VDCSB It is smallish, looks half-decent (lots don't! lol), and reportedly has a very short (as is proper) output cable. Too bad for you they aren't really in the Channel Islands...
The large choke John recommends is for the most part a DIY feature I think. It would greatly increase the size and cost (incl. shipping) of any otherwise fine (for the Touch) PS. You can easily live without it, though I have no doubt it will do some nice stuff to the waveform. Much more beneficial for large current loads though. My Touch seems to only take ~0.4A @ 5V the way I run it. This choke is also relatively easily added to a commercial PS design, probably externally, later if you wanted. I have used quite a few different types of pre-built linear supplies with the Touch. From a simple wall-wart type (~$20, hard to get new now, here) to a lab supply (>$1k). Even the wall-wart sounded better to me than the stock Touch switcher. For the record, the lab supply sounded awful in comparison lol. Then there were the in-between ones price-wise. These are commercial units that require the user to add a line cord, fuse, optional switch, jumper for 120 or 240V, and add an output cable/plug...more than you want to do I think, but simple enough to do. They sounded fine, and you can get an adequate one for ~$50, though $75 was a bit better. However, these are more industrial designs (reliability, not refinement), and I think my DIY ones were significantly better. From what CIA says about theirs, it sounds much more in line with what I build; I'm using hints (big ones!) from Jung and Wellborne. This is an area where a bit of DIY can reap some nice benefits for very reasonable cost. But is probably not appropriate for a beginner to build as parts selection and layout are borderline critical, at least very important, never mind the line voltage thing. If buying, I'd go for the CIA one myself because it seems like a thoughtful design to me, and they did have the SBs in mind when they designed it. But no big choke in it... -- cfraser ------------------------------------------------------------------------ cfraser's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=48869 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91383 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
