PS: On top of the question of which radiation pattern is best (this depends on room and application) current loudspeaker tech is full of compromises. Open versus closed baffle, single versus multiple driver, dynamic versus electrostatic. Each has pros and cons. There isn't one technology that can deliver high performance in every way at once: distortion, impulse response, group delay, dispersion, frequency response etc.
It's in these considerations of environment and technical gaps where the designer's skill, ingenuity and views on psycho-acoustics can result in very different products. By contrast, getting output voltage to be a linear function of output voltage over time is a straightforward endeavour and current tech is measurably excellent at it. This is what I mean by line level equipment being simpler.
