My experience with audio over the last 40+ years really changed when at
some point in my journey I participated in reasonably controlled double
blind testing of components, power supplies, file types, cables, high
end turntables, etc. and found that for many (most things other than
speakers or turntables), fellow listeners could rarely identify things
in any statistically significant way (i.e., subjects' choices were in
effect random guesses).
