This thread has turned out to be very entertaining and highly
enlightening.

One of the biggest and also one of most deserved knocks against
audiophiles, which surprisingly has not been mentioned as yet, is that
they all too often use their mega-buck amazing sounding audio systems to
play really terrible music. The gold standards for well recorded but
often worthless music were usually about half the items on The Absolute
Sound's founder and resident golden eared guru, Harry Pearson's Super
Disc List.

Aside: have you ever noticed the ridiculous amount of name dropping that
goes on in each and every piece written by HP? As if having Dave Wilson
sitting next to you makes his high priced speakers sound better.

While listening to overly compressed pop music on a high end stereo
system can be painful and pointless exercise, listening to well recorded
barely worthwhile music is equally pointless. Just as some audiophile
use their super duper systems to play sound effects recordings ("Wow, it
sounds like the train is actually in my living room!!!"), many of them
spend hours listening to Linda Ronstadt wanna be and glorified back up
Jennifer Warnes sing Leonard Cohen songs or listen to corny soundtrack
music from a mid 1960's cult movie.
