Nicely put and exactly my experience as well.

A number of years ago, I wanted to test my ability to differentiate
16/44 from 24/96 since I always "thought" I experienced "clear"
differences. The day that I put myself through a controlled ABX
experiment changed many of my preconceived notions including how I
started interpreting the comments of other fellow audiophiles, and
comments made in the press.
