24/48 is not really a limitation it's still better than almost all recordings ever done ( yes I know about audiophile labels ...) And as to this day many new projects are simply 48k in protools anyway . And most folks library is cd formatted stuff . My own has a slight overepresentation of hirez rips due to a former life as an audiophile, 100's of DVD'as for example , but it still just a fraction . Due the actual music content you play this is not really a problem as the more than 24/48 recording is so rare.
But it can up the demand on the server . LMS has an excellent transcoding framework ( transparent) for that rare file in some exotic format , that fixes it for you . But the server has to do the work .. However I do prefer good native support less fuzz if the player just plays whatever I throw at it. I think some of the Squeezelite solutions actually exceeds the original squeezeboxes here . Yes we get that even better native format support . The audiablity of hirez formats is for another tread ,or dig out the old ones for example where we did a community test with the help of archimago . But it's a nonstarter when the recording is not even hirez to start with , for example rock records from the 70's.. there is almost no real hirez content , don't be lulled by sites like HD tracks that do sell music packaged in 24/192 files . And one of my fav pet peeves, why so freaking many audio formats ( especially the unnecessary DSD revival and MQA ) also another tread . I'm just happy that LMS with helpers and plugins and the players solves this , but some dev had to devote time to this nonsense to make it so , kudos to them . And the general confusion about container format and actual recording quality having a linear or any relation to each other above a certain basic level , I think we had tread today when someone wanted to view the "quality" of the file in his squeezebox Touch to see if it was 24/192 or DSD etc in the display ?
