Make that almost no one under proper testing conditions with a good MP3 encoder , lame for example . Counterintuitive enough people with bad hearing can sometimes spot MP3 , due that thier personal nonlinear ears :) don't agree whith the model used to discard data . For example MP3 is using our natural masking effect , but if you don't hear the tones that should mask what's not there ? Some bad MP3's has low bass shaved off , " no one has bass <20hz " I have :/ the typical boombox does not .... However hardware squeezeboxes actually have slightly compromised MP3 decoders ( limited CPU power ), so server decode that MP3 or just use lossles formats, ( for archival reasons I try to avoid lossy codex anyway.) On some rare music you can actually get artifacts out of squeezebox playing MP3 , rare but it happens . It's not big problem so I don't want anyone to believe that it that serious , it's probably the same with your old portable MP3 player vs a real computer doing the job , you can throw CPU cycles at more precise algorithms. Can we also assume that Squeezelite based player have better MP3 decoding , or are we victim of floating point support again ? I had some test files years ago , maybe I should test when I get my PI ? That's rarely discussed ? Getting the best out of lossy formats ,we do listen to radio and music services ? Which player uses the bets algorithms/libraries here ? -------------------------------------------------------------------- Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub.
