There are only very few examples where I can distinguish between a high
bit rate mp3 files created with a decent encoder and a lossless FLAC
file in a properly conducted blind ABX test. But I still prefer to rip
my files to FLAC and maintain a lossless library. This is mostly about
the ability to convert to lossy for other uses from this FLAC files at
any time in the future. For example, originally, my mp3 files (for
portables) were 192kbps CBR. Then I redid them as VBR - V2 (~192kbps).
But I'm thinking of reencoding the mp3 library as VBR -V4 or -V5. I
only use these in my portables (headphones in noisy environments like
airplanes). If I had ripped to 320kbps instead of FLAC, I'd be forced
to make a lossy to lossy transformation. With FLAC files I can always
convert my library to anything else with a few mouse clicks. And who
knows, the future might bring new and improved lossy codecs that would
allow me to carry 100,000 tracks on my key fob.
