Eric, a number of mailing lists I belong to have initiated systems to strip attachments out of messages. One very large list which used to handle a lot of attachments has set up an associated FTP site for exchange of large or non-text format files. Frankly I'm not sure aus-soaring needs to go to those lengths. People can always exchange documents privately if they really want to.
Personally, I would be in favour of no attachments on this list.
