There was an accident involving an IS-29 at Stonefield (Barossa Valley GC) last Saturday afternoon. I launched on the first of the winch wires in GZQ with a BVGC pilot in the front seat. I looked back after release to see the IS-29 being lined up for the second wire. I flew off to hunt for a thermal. When I looked back to the airfield I saw cars converging from all directions towards an aircraft off to the left of the runway in use.
My partner, Justine was one of the first on the scene. I understand that it was to be the pilots first flight in the IS-29. I have heard from witnesses that he pulled up into 'full climb'and shortly afterwards the left wing started to drop. The -29 yawed to the left and continued to drop the wing. The left wing hit the ground and the nose rotated into the ground. I am told the pilot had exited the remains of the cockpit before assistance arrived. He had a badly broken left leg and left ankle and was complaining of lower back pain. I am told the ambulance drove him to Truro (?) and met the air ambulance helicopter which took him to Royal Adelaide (?). There was a lot of media attention that evening and on Sunday as well at Stonefield. A reasonable amont of footage of GZQ was taken as it was tied down outside on Sunday morning and the only aircraft visible. Channel 10 even hung around long enough to take footage of GZQ launching.
