Adam, I always liked Professor Eppler's technique for performance mod evaluation, modify one wing only and see whether glider flys straight! Ie the lower drag wing will "Lead" the higher drag one!
Re fairing mod, I would have thought that the increase in handicap would be compensated by the decrease in chances of outlanding but IANAE.
