Actually it was obvious from the first time the security passes were
mooted that any pilots who wanted to be able to use RPT security
controlled aerodromes would need the pass. Including RAaus and glider
(and motorglider)pilots. Check the list of places you cannot use if
you don't have one! There are lots of them. Anyone planning a
gliding safari will need to check.
Getting a student licence nowadays takes several months I'm told as
you get background checked. Why this should apply to just GA pilots
and not glider and RAAus pilots is just an oversight as these people
are just as "dangerous" as prospective GA pilots. My local Federal
member's electorate secretary was quite surprised when I told her
that people didn't forget how to fly when they simply didn't renew
the medical and do a bi annual and these people sure weren't going to
front for a security check just because they may once have held a current PPL.
This nonsense is costing the country heaps. We've had a complete
squad of half a dozen heavily armed federal cops at Toowoomba airport
for a weekend day on a few occasions now. Complete with dog. I'm sure
it is the best possible use of Police resources. Bob Ward asked one
last time if their presence had anything to do with that bin Laden
bloke. Apparently so.
