I think that was kinda the point -- The "campus life" previously included
a fair bit of left-leaning politics, and VSU's reason for being was to
kill that.
It's interesting that within 30 minutes of the vote which enacted the
VSU legislation, the Senate also voted up legislation to authorize Carnegie
Mellon University to establish themselves as a University in Adelaide.
One of the conditions in that legislation is that CMU must offer student
services funded by a compulsory fee levied on enrollees. The main difference
between CMU and any other University in the country, of course, is that
CMU doesn't have a pre-existing left-leaning political body, so it's
perfectly ok to demand compliance with compulsory student services there
even when it's completely ideologically unacceptable to expect the same
thing from the other universities 500m further along King William St.
