I'll have to agree there, I think one can safely assume that all of us have,
at one point, seen things that scare us or things that impress us from the
ones we wouldn't expect it from (or in some cases, would expect it from). I
think I worded that correctly.

Maybe were you come from – where I come from there are quite a number
of serious cross country
pilots (L2 independent operator endorsed) who do not want an instructors
rating even if they
were given away free at the front gate. In my case the tug roster keeps me
out of my glider more then
I would prefer.
Independent Operator endorsements should not be solely geared to the
number of hours people have flown, it also has
to be competency based. There will be members who will be ready before
they reach the pre-requisite hours
and there will be members you would never leave alone with a glider no
matter how many hours they have flown.

I think the best thing about a license is that it would be a concrete goal
for students to aim for after solo. This license would demonstrate that a
pilot has sufficient skill to be responsible for their own actions.
The C certificate falls far short of this. With a C cert you still need
instructor approval to fly cross country, or to take passengers. I'm not
saying that a C certificate qualifies a pilot to make these decisions
without instructor approval - rather there doesn't seem to be a country-wide
bit of paper to work towards that says you are suitably qualified.
In addition, unless you are a level 2 Independent Operator, your club is
always responsible for your operations according to the MOSP - even if you
are in a motorglider flying engine-on 1000K's away.
It seems to me that with the GFA, virtually everyone is considered either
a student or an instructor. There appear to be very few non-instructors who
hold L2 independent ops. The problem is the L2 IO rating takes 200 gliding
hours to earn. To an ab-initio student that is an impossibly huge number of
hours.
I still haven't heard any justifications for such a huge figure (Remember
you can earn a PPL in less then a third of that time). Why not lower the 200
hour figure to say 30-50 hours and call it the license?

Personaly i am quite proud to be a part of an Organization that although
sometimes imperfect, (who isnt) speaks as one voice for our collective
rights. Really if you dont agree with anything the GFA do, the job can be
yours (be prepared for the workload though and real decisions are made by
volunteirs).
I do wonder about how that "parallel Path" gets administered though, I am
in licensing now and boy the international requirements are conveluted to
say the least. With cost recovery (see warbirds at the moment) it may be a
very beurocratic and expencive path.
I hate this whole show me your qualls crap out there now, when i see a red
card (ASIC) around a persons neck at a non RPT AP it allerts me to the
wanker status imediately. Worst is he has probably been told by some
wannabe he MUST wear it.
Take me back to the 70s, Sir Don actually still had benifits of his vision
hapening.
This is all my personal view and not to be taken as gosphel or any policy,
i get it wrong regularly, its too bloody hard to keep clear.
Its nice to hear other views and expressions though, constructive
crytisism may one day push towards improvements albeit slowly..
In sumary there are a lot of warts on this toad and the toad we have is at
least not poisonous.
