Thanks for your advice. The HP ipaq I have also does Tom Tom navigation on my 
car so it spends most of its time on my windscreen. Because it already has an 
internal gps I don't intend connecting an external one to it. The USB currently 
plugs into a cigarette lighter adaptor and then runs of my cars 12 volts. I 
want to plug it into my glider but without the cigarette adaptor.

I think I need to find what voltage is powering it first.

  You need to be very careful - all iPaqs that I know about do NOT use 12v - 
they use about 5.3v (iirc). So you cannot connect the glider 12v supply to 
power your iPaq - at least not directly.

  What I did for my (original) set up was 

    1.. Take the GPS and iPaq you will be using to someone like Johnny 
Appleseed - (they are here in Brisbane and I think elsewhere as well).


    2.. From the dealer, buy a premade cable that plugs into your GPS and your 
iPaq - and also has a 12v car charger to provide power to both. If you are 
using FLARM as the source, you don't have to power that specially, but you will 
need to do a bit of soldering to get the data from the FLARM to the iPaq.


    3.. Remove the innards of the 12v to 5v power supply and buy a small 
project box from Dick Smith to hold this. Connect the glider 12v on the input 
side and you are done.
