This is because the device that plugs into your cigarette lighter does the 12V - 5V conversion for you. I used to use one of these and bought a female cigarette lighter adaptor to plug it into.

This allowed me to break out 12 V for the Volkslogger to drive it and 5 for the iPaq.

In my older age I got lazy and just bought a pre-built box from craggy aero (www.craggyaero.com) because it was a lot neater than what I had cobbled together (although it worked just fine)

Hi Robert,

Thanks for your advice. The HP ipaq I have also does Tom Tom navigation on my car so it spends most of its time on my windscreen. Because it already has an internal gps I don't intend connecting an external one to it. The USB currently plugs into a cigarette lighter adaptor and then runs of my cars 12 volts. I want to plug it into my glider but without the cigarette adaptor.

I think I need to find what voltage is powering it first.

Regards
Don.
