It looks like you have got the right advice from Robert.  I have recently been through the exercise and have placed a 12v to 5.3v DC converter between the glider 12 volt supply (a pair of 7.2 Ah gel cells) and a fused/switched 2.1 mm pin socket mounted in the panel.  This socket normally provides power for the iPAQ 5550, but can also be used to run (or charge) a Blue-Tooth GPS or my CDMA mobile phone, depending on priorities at the time.  If you're going to put in a system make it as flexible as possible.

The HP ipaq I have also does Tom Tom navigation on my car so it spends most of its time on my windscreen. Because it already has an internal gps I don't intend connecting an external one to it. The USB currently plugs into a cigarette lighter adaptor and then runs of my cars 12 volts. I want to plug it into my glider but without the cigarette adaptor.
 
I think I need to find what voltage is powering it first.

You need to be very careful - all iPaqs that I know about do NOT use 12v - they use about 5.3v (iirc). So you cannot connect the glider 12v supply to power your iPaq - at least not directly.

What I did for my (original) set up was
  • Take the GPS and iPaq you will be using to someone like Johnny Appleseed - (they are here in Brisbane and I think elsewhere as well).

  • From the dealer, buy a premade cable that plugs into your GPS and your iPaq - and also has a 12v car charger to provide power to both. If you are using FLARM as the source, you don't have to power that specially, but you will need to do a bit of soldering to get the data from the FLARM to the iPaq.
  • Remove the innards of the 12v to 5v power supply and buy a small project box from Dick Smith to hold this. Connect the glider 12v on the input side and you are done.
