Actually Mike, I believe the penalty unit was increased to $110 to allow for the GST.

Not so - it was previously $105 and fines etc are not subject to GST. However I would expect it to be ready any time now to increase to $115. (Though inflation has accounted for more than 5% since 2000 - and no doubt Mr Rudd will have his eyes on this.)

Re "Penalty Points"
This is not just "CASA speak" , but "Government speak". Last time I checked -some years ago - 1 point = $100.00. I guess that if the government wants to increase fines/penalties across the board for some reason - say for example a CPI change -it simply changes the value of the penalty point. This saves reprinting the legions of Acts and Regulations, that have penalty provisions!

Correct, Gary

Under the commonwealth Criminal code the value of a Penalty Unit is adjusted from time to time to allow for CPI inflation. It is currently $110.
