Oz Runways chose the ipad platform for their GA planning and flight software and I can see why. There was a good number of ipads in use and by choosing to run their software on that they could support only one platform that was tightly specified. Smart move and minimises their support issues.

I thank Steve Burgess for the opportunity to aviate with an iPad running OzRunways. The reason this is at present not a primary navigation tool (ie we had the charts and ERSA in the luggage shelf behind) was shown up with - - leaving the unit in full sun on the strip meant it wouldn't fire up on takeoff (vide co-pilot holding the slab up to the side vent until it cooled and resumed connection)

yep only guaranteed to work between 0 and 35 deg C. Screen unreadable in direct sunlight anyway.

- at times the WAC and GPS track offset slightly from one another on the screen

Haven't noticed that.

In our situation (2 seat side by side) the iPad is a tight fit; meaning 'raising the table during take off and landing'.
Possibly iPad mini will be easier.

Yes I held off an iPad for that reason until the mini became available.

On the positive side, having moving map, ERSA, frequency and coming change over, met all on tap was a boon in lowering pilot workload, notably over country where compass veers off because the geology below.

Yes, it is great. I do like the ability to call up the BoM radar on demand too and the ability to just so quickly call up the ERSA entry, notams and met data for any place particularly if you hadn't planned to go there.

Compass? What compass? Who looks at the compass? Assuming it was ever properly swung in the first place. How many in gliders and motor gliders have ever had this done?

None of this is a function of the OS though. A device with a sunlight readable screen that didn't fail at 35 deg C would be nice but it is a niche market for such things.
