Hi Emilis, I suspect that the GPS unit in the iPad is not as sophisticated as those we are used to using in aviation. I noticed that at times my location on Ozrunways was not updating very frequently, and I'd have very different headings in rapid succession without noticing that I appeared to be going around in circles! I've bought a Garmin GLO, which utilises both US GPS satellites and the Russian GLONASS system, with a rapid start-up and refresh rate, and talks to the iPad by Bluetooth. They are about $135. Since adding one more piece of electrickery to my cockpit the tracking on the iPad appears to have improved and it tells me I am holding a straight heading. Talk about making for lazy flying and navigating!

The reason this is at present not a primary navigation tool (ie we had the charts and ERSA in the luggage shelf behind) was shown up with - - leaving the unit in full sun on the strip meant it wouldn't fire up on takeoff (vide co-pilot holding the slab up to the side vent until it cooled and resumed connection) - at times the WAC and GPS track offset slightly from one another on the screen In our situation (2 seat side by side) the iPad is a tight fit; meaning 'raising the table during take off and landing'. Possibly iPad mini will be easier. On the positive side, having moving map, ERSA, frequency and coming change over, met all on tap was a boon in lowering pilot workload, notably over country where compass veers off because the geology below. _______________________________________________ Aus-soaring mailing list [email protected] To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring _______________________________________________ Aus-soaring mailing list [email protected] To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring
