This isn't for the user guide. It's another doc I agreed to write, and the target audience doesn't include knowledgeable users (unlike the user guide).

If the manual is going to try to instruct the don't-get-its on how to do this, it's going to consume a lot of pages, and will mostly likely never really accomplish the task of imparting an understanding of folders and file systems anyway.
Yes. But this isn't for the user guide. The user guide has a greater focus on the general audience (including knowledgeable users) and definitely tries to impart understanding.
I wouldn't put this thing I'm writing in the user guide, for similar reasons to what you stated.
