I am running into a small problem as I write this. How much
knowledge should we expect a person to know about Draw? When it
comes to creating slides, most of the toolbars available in Draw
can also be used in Impress. Can I refer the reader to the Getting
Started with Draw for details on how to use these toolbars, or do I
need to add that material in my chapter as well? Should I mention
only a few of the simpler ones and refer to the User Guide for the
more complicated ones?

I think, as Jean said, that we are generally assuming that a person
will only be reading the guide that you authoring in. What I mean is
that we assume that someone reading the Impress Guide will not read
any other guide (save maybe the Getting Started Guide.) Each guide
should be able to stand on its own without a lot of references to
other guides.
HTH,
Thanks for the input. This is the decision I have reached. There
are 27 toolbars listed for Impress in OOo Beta2. (1.9.125) All of these
toolbars are also part of Draw. The purpose of Getting Started with
Impress is to state how to create a slide show. The emphasis is on
creating the slides. I believe that a person should know the basics of
Draw before adding more than simple drawings to a slide. After all,
learning how to make drawings while creating a slide is not likely to
give the best results.
So, I have added a paragraph at the beginning of my chapter stating
that a person wanting to make more than simple drawings on a slide
should first acquaint themselves with Getting Started with Draw and the
Draw component of OOo. Obviously, a person wanting much more
complicated drawings should use the User's Guide for advanced
instructions on Draw.

For people who want to put a textual show together, you might encourage
them to ignore Draw (and its multitude of icons) pro tem. Graphics
seems to be a nice extra.
