I have noticed the reverting-to-default problem with many files I have
opened since I upgraded to OOo2.4. I think it's a bug in OOo 2.4. So
far I've mainly been working with relatively old files, whose contents
have a long and complicated history, often having started out in
OOo1.x (as the Fields chapter did). I haven't done any controlled
testing, so I don't know if this happens with newer files (those
containing no content copied from old files).

I may be forced to stop using Writer for my commercial work if its
quality cannot be trusted. This would obviously be a sane course of
action for other users if indeed v 2.4 is flawed in this manner.
I may go back to 2.3.1, which didn't give me any problems.
I know you've been having problems for some time with Load Styles
killing outline numbering. I can't recall if you said whether
that was still an issue in 2.4.
