Same here...
Created a document with custom numbering styles, custom list style,
custom text body and headings but no avail. It works OK.
I might have an old version on my windows partition of the PC at home.
I will try also this theory of the problem occurring with documents
created with OOo 2.x x<4 and will report.

Just take Chapter 14 of the Writer Guide and apply the paragraph styles
for bulleted and numbered lists already in the v. 2.4.0 template that is
still on OOoAuthors site for experiencing this issue.
Chapter 14 now using v 2.3.1 still has its paragraph styles for the
bulleted and numbered lists retained without problem. So, it's seems to
be v 2.4 related.
