I had the same problem when converting old version documents (OOo2.4.1) into OOo3.0 documents for the user guide. It took me quite a bit of work to fix it. I think that you need to convert the paragraph to default formatting *and* switch off numbering or bullets using the toolbar button. Did you have a problem with a newly created document?
