What also would be very useful is checking to see how well OOo PDF export complies with the requirements of various POD printers. Some want PDF/X-1a:2001,among others, for example. And also, is there anything about printing to a PS printer file prior to printing a PDF elsewhere by a printing firm?

I'm continuing my research on this topic and will report here what I find, but it would be really great if some other people did the same... especially anyone who uses a different POD printer (I use Lulu -- many of whose books are printed by Lightning Source -- and also Lightning Source directly). I'm also reading the draft of Alan Shepard's updated book "Aiming at Amazon", which describes how to create PDFs for Lightning Source. Unfortunately, he uses Acrobat (and Word), so the info isn't directly relevant to OOo!

I haven't worked out how to get OOo to print to PS, but I hope I'm just missing something. If I need to create a PDF using Acrobat, I'm not sure where to start if I don't have a PostScript file.

I'm just starting to play around with the PDF/A-1 setting in OOo's PDF export dialog.

Just what can OOo Writer export and what can't it?

Excellent question. I'm asking that myself!

BTW, in my earlier note I said that in PDF import, graphics with transparent backgrounds are imported with black backgrounds. I've now discovered that some come in with other background colours. The general problem, of course, remains the same.
