The sync should be fine with avirec, and cutting videos under Linux works fine
with avidemux. And, "nice --19 avirec" makes it possible to use the PC while
recording. I record in 576x(432-48) XviD on a Duron1200, CPU load is 50-80%.
Give it a try unless you can afford Adobe (R) Premiere (R) ;-)
