Thanks for the suggestions guys. I don't have access to the display list via the class. I have changed my approach, rather than using my custom scrolling text class I am now drawing a new textfield into the sprite directly and applying the material.
Are MovieMaterials converted to cache as bitmaps automatically? The resulting text is appears pixelated even with font embeding enabled.
