He's mentioning a way you can see (in away3d) which face is which...if you go through the faces one by one (as he mentioned), and write them down, you'll know which side/section is which. Then you can apply the material (in away3d) to those faces.
Otherwise, to make your life easier, you can just separate the sections that require different materials into separate objects so you can load all of themall in, and apply the material to those separate sections.
