Have you looked into using a particle framework like Flint?

There are examples on using it with Away3D. I am not sure it works
with the latest version of Away3D, though.

With only Away3D, I would use (or extend) the Plane Class and assign a
BitmapMaterial to it. You can test different size like 10x10 or 20x20
pixels for performance. If you don't need dynamic shading or complex
materials you can probably use Away3DLite for better performance.
