With Sprite's i can double the number of particles and stay within the 20-24fps range.
Here's my demo running at 24fps with 800 particles all moving simultaneously: http://inchwormstudio.com/dev/atomizer/ It uses a pair of FixedVibration classes from the Hype framework to do the jiggling and then there are some random camera moves in there as well.
