Yep, I was able to import different 3DS files (none of my own, that is) and
they worked fine.  I'm sure that my artist and I are making a novice mistake
in Blender that's being passed into the exported 3DS file.

if you import as obj file, you would not have this issue as said in previous

I'll use OBJ for now then.  Thanks for the clarification.
