I personally published two trees on ancestry, maternal and paternal.
The hints function hasn't helped me much more than to maybe fill out a
place or make a date more precise..although in some cases I was able
to find parents for people who married into my family. Having my trees
up also alerted me to when someone put up a tree almost the exact same
as mine, which clued me in that at least one of my cousins was doing
research too (unfortunately it was my non-portuguese side)....The
other hints I find, and this is usually from oneworldtree or people
who have copied information directly from there is people who have
parents and children listed that according to dates of birth there
could be no way of happening. I've found them to be as little apart as
2 years, as far apart as 3 centuries....and the three centuries one
was someone apparently having children 3 centuries before they were
born.

I just make sure to check thoroughly before I accept a hint.

as for people taking from my own tree? I'm still waiting for someone
to do that to my portuguese tree in hopes that there is a connection.
That is the good thing about it, when you have no more leads and no
knowledge of family members, you might suddenly have a cousin you
never knew pop up.
