I guess I'm getting in on the tail-end of this discussion, but I
thought I'd put my two cents worth in, anyway.

I use Ancestry quite a bit. I have not, up until this point, chosen to
share my family tree with them for their publication. I can't even
give you a reason for my reluctance, really. Especially since I have
published my own family tree and that of my husband (100% Azorean
descent he is, the pure blood!) on my personal web site. My thoughts
are that anytime you publish your data in a public way, such as a
written publication or most especially on the web, you are bound to
have that data copied, used, borrowed, or stolen (take your pick) from
anyone at anytime. That person may have a legitimate link to your
family or just THINK they do. If you don't want anyone using the data
you have worked hard to collect, then don't publish it!

As the original poster to this thread found out, another person CAN
take even just portions of your tree and connect it incorrectly to
their own. Sigh. It happens all the time. There are a lot of very poor
researchers out there who are only interested in collecting names and
don't really care how they do it or even take the time to check it to
see if it is indeed correct. It's just the nature of the
beast .........the beast being the Internet and genealogy. We just
have to take the bad with the good and make the best of it.
