Eric, You are so correct, he didn’t read or write that I know of, I was told he would sign his name with an X. The person (I believe) that filled out the form says F. Dias could be my fathers sister Florence, she may have would have been the one that put Garcia in the name. I couldn’t say whether she live just down the street from him but? as the addresses show. As a child , my mother (who was not Portuguese) was always telling me different things about the family and where the lived when etc. Another noteworthy item is my Grandfather actually had a contractors license and made concrete sidewalks, I recall my mom showing me a stamp that was pressed in the the wet concrete that had his license number and name. The son, from the wife Pauline (whom I never met) that he named Manuel as well lived in Antioch, California with his wife Stella, I think (not sure Stella my have been Mexicano?) they for children Steve, Stephanie, Vicky and Mark.
OK, Thanks again Greg From: eric edgar Sent: Saturday, February 11, 2012 7:45 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Grandfathers Birth Place Greg, The draft card shows he didn'tread or write, just his mark, so that means that depending on what question was asked the answered could vary. I've often seen different middle name or mother maiden names given for the same person. The Social Security entry for the Manuel Dias that died in 1964 is shown as Diaz, where the California database is Dias. I believe he was around 20 years old, would of put him in 1908 I found through familysearch.com a draft card. I am sure it’s his because of the birthdate and the contact relative was my aunt Florence. The draft card says Manuel Garcia Dias, I never heard the name Garcia, only a rumor about Furtado. I have poured over those pages looking for possibilities lately and ever since they came online. Possibly the ships manifests had used the name Furtado or Garcia BUT finding his immigration card in a box of photos, it’s actually a replacement card he got in 1955, it shows his birth date of Oct 17 1888 on Faial This was an inspiring find. since I knew not were he was born nor the date. I will love the Azores, planning to go maybe this June. Funny... but I’ve always been fascinated by islands, the sea, earthquakes, pirates and where in Portugal my grandfather came from!! Do you know if he came to the US with wife and children so I might to try and find the right one? I am assuming you do not have their ship's manifest yet? "E" PS: Most of us don't speak/read/write Portuguese or Spanish for that fact..but we learned to read the records with help from online sites..Also, you will love the Azores. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to mailto:azores%[email protected].
