I must chime in here. To those of you wondering if it is worth the $ to use
"family finder" to help in your research ... use my recent success as an
example (more to follow). Second, to those of you who have taken the effort
and expense to submit DNA to FTM ... why on earth have you not loaded a
GEDCOM yet? It is ONLY through the combination of DNA match and dedicated
reviews of matching GEDCOM that fellow researchers can make sense of the
results.
Here is my recent experience.
I signed up for DNA testing years ago. I asked for every advance that came
along. When "family finder" was offered it took me awhile to understand the
significance of the possible research avenues this test offered.
I got my results a few months ago ... and then the various "matches"
started coming in. What frustrated me was that several of those I matched had
not submitted GEDCOMs to the project so those of us trying to make sense of
DNA connections that might offer research hints were offered tantalizing hits
without a research avenue.
Fortunately a few weeks ago another researcher submitted his GEDCOM and
paid for the Family Finder test.
He was among several "hits" with my FF results. But when I looked at others
in the group, there was no family history for me to review and compare to
my own.
When I looked at the exception (a FF hit and GEDCOM for review), I saw a
geographical connection that warranted further research. I found evidence
that led me to look more carefully at a specific village in Flores. When I
did, I found a potential parent set for my ggm.
Eventually (in a few days) proved that:
` A) the person who submitted their FF DNA was my 6th cousin.
B) The village in Flores for his ancestor was the same as my ggm
origin.
C) by tracing both lineages back I found the common ancestral pair
for both of us ... back in 1700s.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Take the Family Finder test ... on sale now.
Submit your GEDCOMs!!
Make connections and grow your knowledge of you own ancestry!

OK, correction!
ANYONE who has tested with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) received a coupon with
a code. So if I run out of coupon (discount) codes, I will find a code for
you!
We have 92 Family Finder results in the Azores DNA Project so far. Sam K.
posted about her connection to Al Rose and others. I mentioned matching
Salli Souza. I think this may be the beginning of something really good! I
have 4 Family Finder tests at the lab right now so we'll see what those
results bring in addition to anything from this sale (and future sales).
Here's a question I received regarding Family Finder that others may be
wondering about as well:
Q: What happens if my ancestors were first cousins?
A: It kind of messes up the results. Your match will look stronger than
it really is.
Here's a chart of my dad's to illustrate.
Name - Total DNA - Relationship (4C1R = 4th cousin 1x removed)
Altino 191.21 2C
Dan 154.87 2C or 3C (possible double Port. line shared)
Jim 129.36 2C1R
Shirley 105.71 4C1R 11 Port. lines shared
Tom 76.94 3C
Chas R. 62.94 4C1R
Chas C. 23.45 5C
Now, if you look at who my dad is matching, he shares the most DNA with
Altino and the least with Charles C (Chas C). With Altino, he shares 191.21
and with Chas C he shares 23.45. Then if you look at the relationship, you
see my dad is a 2nd cousin to Altino and the cousin level gets to be
further and further out to the 5th cousin level. Except with Shirley (Allegre
-
of this list). My dad and Shirley share 105.71 in total DNA. That should
be around the 2nd or 3rd cousin level, but she's really a 4th cousin, once
removed on paper. That should be more like 60 or 70 something in total DNA
and it's not. Why? Because they share 11 Portuguese lines. Some of them
are too far back for this type of DNA testing but there's probably a good
portion of them still existing between my dad and Shirley to goof up the
suggested relation.
