Hi Pamela, I think Simmons is a corruption or Anglization of something like Simas or Simoes. The island he came from is Sao Miguel. Sao kind of rhymes with cow, but with a S at the beginning. Sao before a first name does mean Saint.
The DNA on sale at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA)... Since we're on the Azores list, I pretty much talk about these sales from the point of view of the Azores DNA project. But when FTDNA has a sale, it's good for everybody, any surname, any geographical group (Scotland, Italy, Isle of Man, Lost Colony of Roanoke, etc). If you are interested in DNA testing, then your next step would be to email me offlist at gfscherim at gmail.com and ask me to find a coupon for you. Then you would order your kit and get your Gedcom ready. Any genealogy software program can make a Gedcom for you. FTDNA only takes the name, birth date & location, death date & location for a bare bones type of tree so others have a vague idea of your lineage and where they match you. As you build your family tree and add to it, you can take down your GEDCOM from FTDNA and put up a new one. Hope this helps!
