First time poster :) I am trying find information on Manuel Joseph Vargas of Fayal.
Born: 08 Jul 1859 Fayal, Madeira, Portugal USA Arrival: Abt. 1879 His Death Cert shows a father by the same name. His obituary reads: VARGAS - In Eden Canyon, Hayward, CA, March 13, 1949 Manuel Joseph, beloved husband of the late Mary Vargas; loving father of Mrs. Anna Davilla, Mary, Emanuel, Joseph, Louie, Frank, Geiorge and FOrtuna Vargas and the late William Vargas: Brother of Frank Vargas Cardoza of San Jose, a member of I.D.E.S. of Hayward; A native of Fayal, Azore Islands The obit shows a brother named, "Frank Vargas Cardoza" does that mean I can assume the mothers maiden name to be Cardoza? I am also searching out for the Surname Quilla. Joao Souza Quilla (aka Joachin Souza Quilla), born 20 Dec 1832, from Santa Cruz, Graciosa, , Portugal who married Maria I. Dioga Nascimento, born 20 Dec 1839, of Santa Bárbara, Azores, Portugal(assuming St. Jorge). Quilla I believe is the Americanized version of Coelho. Joao Quilla I believe migrated with a daughter to San Mateo, Half Moon Bay, CA. The daughter is Mary R. Quilla (married Manuel Vargas listed above). I can not for the life of me find a death record, ship, burial or census record for him to prove he made it here. His son Manuel Quilla of Salinas, Ca was written about in a book that spoke of him coming to america to join his sister and father who proceeded him. Suggestions, comments, complaints welcome...
