Ralph, You can either wait until Microsoft comes out with the Windows 8 update this fall, or I was told you can go to Start Is Back (www.startisback.com) and for $3 or $4 you can have the Start menu back.
But that won't solve the problem of older programs running on Windows 8. You can either take your FTM file to the FHC on a flash drive and have a friend create a Gedcom for you and put it on your flash or you can get the new FTM. I believe if you get a different genealogy program you will still have to Gedcom it over.
