Back about 10 years ago, I bought some other programs to try out. The Master Genealogist and Family Tree Maker, plus maybe one more. I also had tried PAF when I first started. But I liked BK the best.
One thing I remember is when creating the gedcom, all my named converted to upper case. Right now, I use upper case on surnames and I type them in that way. It's not something automatically generated.
So if I were to ever want to change programs, would that still be a problem with case?
Also, I don't like little things that seem to be automatic. Like abt for a date. I always write out about 1704.
And then what would happen with a date like " 17 Apr 1642 ?? " (note the two question marks after the year)?
That's how I write a date when I find some information, perhaps from a book or someone else, that I have not yet verified.
I think I would get zillions of error messages from these things I currently have. Yet they are not a problem if I just keep my same program.
Then there is a real decent chance my fields would be a major problem.
For instance, for lack of a better field that is viewable from the edit screen on BK, I use one that is called "Ref number" (Reference number) for when I note whether a woman is "mulher solteira" or a person's father is "pai incognito" or if they are an "exposto" etc. Would that show on the screen so I can see that at a glance? I kinda doubt it.
And maybe I have an occupation field for each different type of job.
One time a person might be "trabalhador" in 1704 and then in 1711 be "sapateiro" and I have two separate occupation fields for this. What will happen when transferring all my data to another program with these double or triple occupation fields?
There are so many other examples of this that I shudder to imagine how long it would take to go through all my entries to fix them and conform to another program.
Maybe I should have changed this subject to reflect this discussion of Brother's Keeper.

--Also, I went onto the Brother's Keeper web site. It says:Create a Gedcom with your program. Then go to Notepad and open that .ged file. You will see that kind of coding and information in it. All genealogy software programs (since the 1990s) have the ability to read that kind of coding which then imports it into your software program. If you look at it, it kinda makes sense if you can follow the sequence of it. Large files are hard to follow and sequence parent to children.Doug,That's not how Joao's program looks, that's how a Gedcom file looks.
<<Version 6 can show multiple names for a person.>>I looked at the screen shot (boy, your program looks reeeeeeally archaic), and I would guess that you'd either click on the Add Event button or the Options button to find that Alternate Name or Name Variation. And if that doesn't work, I'd read the help file.I have no idea how long Brother's Keeper 6 has been out, but they've just found out users need to have more than one name for an ancestor?
