"Pai nao sabido" means you'll never know for sure who the parents are. It is a 
bad policy - one that puts the parents' convenience ahead of the needs of the 
child, and, of future generations. It needs to be ended. Having said that one 
can only guess. In the instant matter, the fact that Maria dos Anjos' had the 
same name as her grandmother tends to lead credence to that selection. As for 
which surname Maria chose to use, we don't know, because it isn't actually 
recorded. She could have used pretty much any name she chose to. The given 
names Jacinta and Joaquina are not that far apart - many women were known by 
different names at different times of their lives. They may have even had the 
req'd Maria first. :) Also, people seldom knew when their date of birth was. 
Their society didn't put as much stock in IDs as our does. So, don't worry 
about the names and dates, you'll just wear yourself out, and questions will 
still be there. Sometimes this is as close as one gets. I have a GGF who was a 
foundling - that really puts a hole in your pedigree chart, because you lose 
both parent lines forever.
