I am working with one of my dad's DNA matches who has a "pai incognito" or "pai nao sabido." My dad is his strongest match, suggesting a 2nd cousin level, BUT, my dad's DNA really gives the wrong prediction because his grandparents were double first cousins.
This match also matches just about everyone who descends from Antonio de Mello and Constancia de Jesus (de Pimentel), both born in the 1760s in Ponta Garca on Sao Miguel. And this match sat like that from early 2010 until mid 2013, when someone else tested. This person's matches bring the "pai nao sabido" one generation closer, to the 1790s. Not knowing his line will make this real slow, but we will be able to reconstruct his tree to a certain point. As more and more people test with most of their documented lines, we'll be able to reconstruct some of those unknown lines.
