Eric, That seems to be standard practice in genealogy (at least in the ones connected to mainland research)... Writing the names the old way would result in a multitude of surnames, and different firstnames (Joao, Joam, etc.). I follow that rule myself.
Also, what would be the correct name for the cases where the birth record is spelled one way, marriage record another and the death record in yet another way?
