There is the very common occurence of Azorean immigrants of the 1800-1900s who arrived in America and are recorded on census as being unable to read or write. How do you verify original spellings?
My great grandfather is recorded on his baptism as Eladio, yet all his own spelling on immigration papers is as Heladio. How do I record? The older records are the more optional spelling seems to be.
