Exactly. Before 1911, there was no standard on how to write Portuguese (see

Let me write that again, and sorry for shouting:

Before 1911, NO ONE KNEW HOW TO WRITE CORRECTLY IN PORTUGUESE. There was no 
such thing as proper spelling before that.

How can you claim it should be written one way or the other? You can't. It 
all depends on how the person (priest?) writing the record BELIEVED that he 
should write the name. It may make your blood boil that I'll systematically 
convert all the Joam to João, but honestly, when I'm searching my DB for a 
certain João Silva, I don't want to be also searching for Joham Syllva or 
whatever. Also, there was the annoying custom of feminizing surnames for 
women, which I also 'correct' Hannah Cardoza, is recorded in my DBs as Ana 
Cardoso.
