Barbara, There may be others in the group that may have a broader background in word etymology but here's my interpretation. Mariante and Maritimo are interchangeable words that can be given the same meaning at the times (era) they were being used to describe a profession but, the word mariante present day "marujo" meaning sailor, man of the sea, man that navigates the Sea. While Maritimo could mean the same yet this word has a much broader range but it seemed to have replaced "mariante" for the occupation of sailors or fisherman but in most cases it meant "fisherman".
