Assunto: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Difference between words Mariante, Maritimo

Barbara,

There may be others in the group that may have a broader background in word
etymology but here's my interpretation. Mariante and Maritimo are
interchangeable words that can be given the same meaning at the times (era)
they were being used to describe a profession but, the word mariante present
day "marujo" meaning sailor, man of the sea, man that navigates the Sea. While
Maritimo could mean the same yet this word has a much broader range but it
seemed to have replaced "mariante" for the occupation of sailors or fisherman
but in most cases it meant "fisherman".

Hope this helps

My male ancestors from the island of Faial, Feteira are listed as Mariante and
Maritimo. I was wondering is there is a difference between the terms. Other
male ancestors are listed as Trabahador, a worker. A worker could mean many
types of work, maybe farm work? All women in my family are Domesticas which
makes me wonder if women had outside of the home occupations, and, if working
outside the home, would this work be recognized in parish records, birth,
marriage, death.

Ideas appreciated, Barbara
