Howland was somewhere in California on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census.  He
naturalized in Mass and that record is noted as lost on the naturalization
index.

Don't know George's source for the island of Faial.  I just helped him out
with a couple of California sources.  Don't know if Faial has any civil
registry films available.
