Tombstone makers make mistakes. His daughter was not there at his birth.
But, your ancestor was the one who gave the information on that UPEC
register. Most of our ancestors were illiterate. So he was born around 1850
or so. And from the Conceicao church in Angra. Your friend is right...don't
trust the dates. I can't remember how many different years I had on my
ancestor. 5 or something.

Occupations also change too.

You need to document everything you can in America. There's a how to guide

It took me 25 documents and 4 years to figure out my immigrant ancestor. I
did this all before the Internet. Today, I could probably do it in a few
months with all the stuff on the Internet.  However, you need to follow the
paper trail in America and work your way back. Just jumping over there may
not work. Create a timeline for your ancestor here in America first.
